new year. and tonight there's big trouble on the mighty mississippi. it's becoming impossible for barges to move on some parts of the river. nbc's kevin tibbles reports on the cargo that is high and dry. >> reporter: the mighty mississippi. so parched and dry that shipping could grind to a halt by week's end. >> we'll soon be hitting record low water levels that we have not seen within the middle mississippi river. >> reporter: drought conditions have failed to replenish the mississippi where in places water levels have dropped 10 feet in 6 months. in thebes, illinois near st. louis, the u.s. army corps of engineers is dredging and blasting the river bottom to help keep shipping lanes open. everything from oil to cement to chemicals, to 60% of u.s. grain exports moved down this river. >> it's a major artery to the gulf coast, no doubt. all the exports go down this river to the center gulf. >> reporter: and this artery is clogged. >> it is clogged up. >> reporter: a typical tow boat moves 15 loaded barges. it would take six locomotives pulling 216 rail cars, or 1,050 tractor-traile

quite perfect here throughout the mississippi valley. can use the rain for that low mississippi river. but we're going to see that rain and some storms moving in thursday. some mountain snow here in the west as that system pushes to the east. some cold air behind it. still dealing with some very mild air here in the southeast. a little more cloud cover on thursday. then friday we'll we're going to have the showers move a little bit farther to the east. look at these temperatures jumping into the 70s. widespread lower 70s in many spots in the south. different story in the intermountain west. more snow on the way. it's going to be cold and look and feel like winter. you see this front drapes across the region, the middle part of the country on saturday. mild air here in new york. 57 mid 60s in d.c. on saturday. and then on sunday you're going to have a front that's going to go from the ohio valley down into the lower mississippi valley with a chance for some showers, still a warm day in atlanta. and we're going to see a little bit cooler air throughout much of the west. that's wha

england. it hit mississippi yesterday. a lot of schools are cancelled. airports are doing okay. old ripple effect across the country. so farther not doing too bad and the next couple of hours that snow will be gone. in the west barely a cloud in sight. just very cold. huge area of high pressure. it's like a big dome. doesn't allow any weather systems to come near you. at night with calm winds it gets very chilly. some clouds spilling into wyoming and montana. high pressure of idaho will keep all the stormy weather away for a long time. maybe for the foreseeable future. as far as temperatures go a little bit of wind chill in a few spots but for the most part just very chilly, temperatures like the last couple of days struggling this morning but with sunshine this afternoon it will feel a lot and the coast with fog end up in the 30s. just taking a look at the extended forecast for seattle. five days from now still looking sunny and nice. 40. >> some of that stuff in the east coming from the west which they were experiencing earlier in the week. straight ahead a last minute death row a

people from mississippi up to pennsylvania. al, you have been keeping an eye on them. >> a powerful frontal system is bringing warm, moist air ahead of the cold air. tornado watches from louisiana up into west virginia as the afternoon wears on. we expect those to move further east. we got a risk of strong storms from mobile, alabama up to pittsburgh, as far south as the dell ma va peninsula. can't rule out tornadoes with the system. here is what we are looking for. it's bringing a lot of rain. it's got a lot of energy. the jet stream is moving on top of it. we look to the thunderstorms to develop ahead of it. we may see tornadoes. behind it, colder air wrapping around the system. it's going to bring snow. anywhere from two to six inches of rain into the interior sections of new england. flood watches are up in pennsylvania, new york state and behind the system as cold air is drawn in, we are looking at a lot of snow. anywhere from a foot of snow in parts of iowa to a foot of snow in parts of wisconsin, the u.p. of michigan and expecting snowfall amounts upwards of about six to 12 i

tennessee and even back through mississippi and alabama. so we'll be watching that one closely here at the weather channel. 42 degrees by thursday in atlanta, nearly 20 degrees colder. 28 in chicago. only 17 in minneapolis. we're still pretty mild as the air builds back in across the southern plains. 55 in dallas, 60 in houston. how about 73 in los angeles. another clipper system moves through on friday. we're quieting down across much of the east but that will bring light scattered snow across the great lakes and into the upper midwest here. that will be the trend on saturday also. looking dry for the southeast, much colder air in place. 35 in louisville, 24 in chicago, only 40 in new york city on sunday. snowshowers east of the lakes through the interior part of the northeast there on sunday. and on monday looks pretty quiet for the majority of the country. but a lot of cold temperatures on the map. remember you can get the latest forecast week day mornings on the weather channel wake up with al at 5:30. swings through with a chance of showers across the mississippi valley. snow for the high plains. notice where the coldest air is where you see the shades of pink on the map. 19 in minneapolis on saturday. and look at these numbers across the east for saturday and sunday. we stay mild ahead of this cold front. so we've got 71 in atlanta, 74 in new orleans. but cooling off in louisville, chicago, all the way down to 30. big day in atlanta as the falcons take on the seahawks. of course a lot of people tailgating for that. on monday more rain expected here across the east. and we'll see some of the showers move into the northeast and temperatures slowly starting to come down by early next week. and we're getting a lot quieter across the west. so not tracking any winter storms in that direction. remember you can get the latest forecast week day mornings, wake up with al and stephanie at 5:30 on the weather channel. unusual places like the deep south. we're going to see snow into mississippi, alabama, even north georgia. that may bring snow to the atlanta area. it will be later in the evening if we get any snow. we expect most of the accumulation on the north side of the state. but the heaviest amounts where we could see 6 to 12 inches will be across the appalachians. parts of eastern tennessee and into western north carolina. get ready for a very snowy day. and some snow may make it into d.c., the baltimore area. at this point we're look at mostly rain mixing in with a few flakes. i don't think it will be too big for your travel impacts later in the afternoon. 39 in d.c. so we're pretty much staying above freezing throughout the day. 48 in atlanta. the temperatures get a lot colder as we head into the evening. some very cold air moving into the upper midwest and the northern plains here. be prepared for that. temperatures will stay below average for several days as the clipper system moves through on friday that will bring some snow to the western lakes. we're looking at clearing for the sou
